Andover Central Park
The Andover Central Park nature path, which is possibly the first thing you will see upon entrance; the path is approximately 1.25 miles and encompasses the Lake George. In Lake George, you will find fishes that were stocked by the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism. The Lake George currently has a handicap accessible fishing docks and state issued fishing license is required in order for you to do fishing there; therefore, once you attain fishing license fishing in Lake George is one activity you can do in Wichita.
If fishing isn’t your idea of a good time, there are several picnic areas on the lake in addition to a large shelter across the street from the library. You can bring a small basket and you and your family and or friends can enjoy a quiet picnic in the Andover Central Park.
Sedgwick County Zoo
The Sedgwick County Zoo was established in the year of 1963 by citizens who then formed the Sedgwick County Zoological Society. Since its establishment, the zoo has seen a steady progress with the opening of new major exhibits every few years.
In 1974 the Sedgwick county zoo saw the opening of the Herpetarium, soon after in the year of 1974 the Jungle was open, followed by the South American Pampas and Australian Outback exhibits in 1980, the Apes and Man Building cam next in the year of 1982. The increase in wildlife habitats and the expansion of the Sedgwick County Zoo steadily went on like this for the next two decades.
Today the Sedgwick County Zoo is the home of 3,000 animals of close to 400 different species. At the Zoo, you will find the animals grouped in geographical order with their surroundings depicting their natural habitat, in an effort to make the animals as comfortable as possible.
A visit to the Sedgwick County Zoo would amount to being an all day activity if you were to see all the animals they have as residents.
Botanica
Botanica originally open its doors with a total of four gardens and a horticultural library; today the Botanica has a combination of 30 gardens. Botanica has been in operation since 1987 and was initially opened with the Mission: “to generate enthusiasm for Horticulture and enlighten people through educational, artistic, and cultural experiences.”
The Botanica is the home to over 4,000 different species of plants that are both native and new to the region. All the gardens are decorated with a combination of sculptures, flowing streams, fountains, and waterfalls.
A day spent at Botanica will be one of tranquility and beautiful sightseeing.
